US Open
The first US Open was played in 1881 on grass at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island. It moved from its longtime home at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, Queens, to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in 1978.
The tournament has always been an innovator whose ideas are adopted across the tennis world. It started the tiebreak system to settle 6-6 ties in 1970. In 1975 it started night matches by installing lights. In 2006, it pioneered the use of Hawk-Eye digital systems for instant replay reviews.
The US Open has also played a role in bringing women and people of color into the game. Althea Gibson, who dominated women’s tennis in the 1950s, became the first African American woman to win the US Open in 1957. That was before the U.S. Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Arthur Ashe became the first African American man to win the US Open in 1968.
If you are old enough to remember, you will remember that Billie Jean King’s 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” with Bobby Riggs was a big deal. She won. That was right at the beginning of the Women’s Rights Movement. Billie Jean King was considered a champion, not just of tennis, but of women’s rights. She was one of the women’s rights pioneers. In 1975, the US Open became the first Grand Slam tournament to give equal prize money to men and women. Now some women are bigger stars than the men.
The tennis grand slams are:
- Australian Open on hard courts in Melbourne in January.
- French Open on clay in Paris in May.
- Wimbledon on grass in London in July.
- US Open on hard courts in New York in August and September.
