FEBRUARY
Argentine Contemporary Ballet
Herman Cornejo (ABT) with Grupo Cadabra dance “Anima Animal,” an Argentine contemporary ballet inspired by Vaslav Nijinsky’s “Caapara” (1917), a ballet about the Indigenous Guaraní legend of the mystical Urutau ghost bird. The Urutau sings a nightly death song for its lost love after an angry father murdered his daughter’s lover and turned her into a bird so she could not tell on him. What a great ballet story. “Caapara” was never staged because Nijinsky became ill, but it would have been the first Argentine ballet. “Anima Animal” is at the Joyce Theater in Chelsea, Manhattan; from Tuesday-Sunday, February 18-23, 2025 at 7:30pm with a Wednesday curtain chat, and weekend matinees at 2pm. From $72. joyce.org 🇦🇷
Argentine Tango Show
“Tango After Dark” is an Argentine tango show featuring tango world champions Germán Cornejo and Gisela Galeassi, dancing to live music composed by Astor Piazzolla; at the Joyce Theater in Chelsea, Manhattan; from Tuesday-Sunday, February 25 – March 9, 2025, with a Wednesday curtain chat, and weekend matinees at 2pm. From $52. joyce.org 🇦🇷

About the Joyce Theater
The Joyce Theater is New York City’s main dance theater, after Lincoln Center and New York City Center.
It really is New York City’s busiest dance theater. The 472-seat theater runs a 45-48 week season for over 150,000 dance lovers every year. Since the Joyce opened in 1982, it has been the New York home for over 400 dance companies from around the world.
It is the legacy of Publishers Clearing House founders LuEsther Turner Metz and her daughter Joyce. The Joyce Foundation also develops dance in Cuba and around the world. The theater first opened in 1941 as the Elgin Theater, a movie house.
American Dance Platform is the Joyce’s showcase during the APAP convention of booking agents and presenters in January.
Ballet Festival is the Joyce’s ballet showcase in August
