MARCH
Italian Alternative
Paolo Angeli plays Sardinian folk-influenced Latin alternative on his one-of-a-kind, one-man-band guitar, for the World Music Institute at Joe’s Pub in NoHo, Manhattan; on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 7pm (6pm doors). worldmusicinstitute.org 🇮🇹
Angeli is sort of a Laurie Anderson of the guitar. He has added so many physical and electronic extensions to his instrument, that he is a one-man-band. You’ve never seen or heard anything like this. Sardinia is a now Italian island that has historically been ruled by many Mediterranean powers of North Africa, West Asia, and Europe. You can hear the island’s history in his music. You will be surprised that it’s all made by one man on one extended guitar.
Spanish Flamenco Festival
Marina Heredia “De lo jondo a Lorca” (From the depths to Lorca) sings a Granadan flamenco tribute to Spanish poet Federico Lorca with guitarist José Quevedo “El Bolita,” for the World Music Institute and Flamenco Festival New York; at Kaufman Music Center in Manhattan’s Upper West Side; on Friday, March 14, 2025 at 8pm (7:30pm doors). From $45. worldmusicinstitute.org 🇪🇸

Griots (traveling storytellers and musicians) are the West African equivalent of American folk singers, Cuban trova singers, and European troubadours. People around the world do similar things because we are human. Jobarteh is special in that she keeps family traditions alive, while at the same time bringing them into the present and our shared future.
Indian Alternative
Anoushka Shankar, the British-American sitar player of Indian descent, plays Indian alternative; for the World Music Institute at Le Poisson Rouge (LPR) in Greenwich Village, on Thursday, March 27, 2025 at 8pm (7pm doors) from $60 plus minimums; and The Town Hall in Midtown, Manhattan on Friday, March 28, 2025. worldmusicinstitute.org 🇮🇳
