Mon Laferte is a Chilean Mexican alternative singer-songwriter and visual artist who works in many styles. She has the fierce politics that is characteristic of Chileans because of the Pinochet dictatorship, but culturally, she is very Mexican. Where we live often says more about us, than where we came from.

Mon Laferte
Norma Monserrat Bustamante Laferte was born in Viña del Mar, Chile in 1983. She got started in music by winning contests as a child and then playing in bars as Monserrat Bustamante. In 2003, she joined the Chilean reality TV show “Rojo” and released her debut album “La Chica de Rojo.” It was a hit in Chile.
In 2007, she moved to Mexico City to pursue her career. That makes sense because Mexico City, not Madrid, is the world capital of Spanish-language media. Just as she was preparing a new album, thyroid cancer shut her down. After overcoming that, she changed her stage name to Mon Laferte. Once you look death in the face, you never live the same way again.
Her third album “Tornasol” (2013) earned Latin Grammy nominations for “Best New Artist” and “Best Alternative Music Album.” Her fifth album “La Trenza” was her big breakout. Her single “Amárrame,” featuring Colombian rocker Juanes, was nominated in the major Latin Grammy categories and won “Best Alternative Song”
“Norma” (2019) won the Latin Grammy for “Best Alternative Music Album.” “Biutiful” (2020) won the Latin Grammy for “Best Rock Song.” “Seis” (2021) was won the Latin Grammy for “Best Singer-Songwriter Album.”
