Los Ángeles Azules
The band plays cumbia sonidera which is basically electronic cumbia with accordion and electronic instruments. The band’s name is Spanish for “The Blue Angels.” The band is made up of the Mejía Avante family. They started in 1976, but got serious in 1980.
Their breakthrough hit was “Cómo te voy a olvidar” in 1997. They have rerecorded it with many major guest artists.
They have stretched the form in other ways such as cumbia sinfónica with a symphony orchestra. It works. In 2018, they were the first traditional cumbia band to play the Coachella Music Festival.
Mexican Cumbia
Cumbia is originally Colombian, but Luis Carlos Meyer Castandet worked with orchestra director Rafael de Paz in Mexico in the 1940s. Mexican Cumbia grew from this.
We love dancing Cumbia, and Mexican Cumbia has a funky cool vibe to it. You can dance with Cumbia, Two-Step/Foxtrot or Salsa steps, but the slower beat makes it easy to improvise. We’re originally from Los Angeles. This is the music of home.
