Aldo Sessa
Aldo Sessa is one of the great photographers of Argentina.
He was born in Buenos Aires in 1939. Sessa started his professional photography career when he was just ten years old. He first exhibited at a group show in Buenos Aires in 1952. Sessa worked as a photojournliast for La Nación, one of Argentina’s two leading newspapers.
He has collaborated with noted Argentine authors such as Jorge Luis Borges and Manuel Mujica Laínez. Some of the iconic photos of Argentine Tango are Sessa’s.
His photo archive is approaching 1 million images. It is something of a the evolution of Argentina during his lifetime. Sessa’s work has been shown in over 200 exhibitions around the world. He has produced more than 40 photography books.
Sessa currently has a major retrospective at MAMBA, the Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Art. Archivo: Aldo Sessa 1958 – 2018 is on view through May 27, 2018.
Gauchos
Sessa is famous in Argentina. He is best known for his pictures of the culture of Argentina, especially gauchos, the mythical Argentine cowboys.
After promising Juan José Gïraldes, president of the Argentine Gaucho Confederation, that he would record the last traces of Argentine gaucho tradition, Sessa traveled to every corner of Argentina and made about 50,000 pictures. Sessa shoots film, not digital.
Some of those pictures are in Sessa’s coming new book Gauchos: Icons of Argentina by Assouline.
World Ports
Buenos Aires is a port city. Sessa travels the world photographing other port cities. His amazing photographs of New York City include iconic images of The Statue of Liberty and The Chrysler Building.

Sessa is here in New York a lot. You may run into him on the street with his ever present camera. He’s the quiet old guy with several cameras on his shoulder who doesn’t even see you watching because he is so engrossed in getting a good picture.
