El Salvador was fortunate in that it didn’t have to fight a war to become independent.
El Salvador was originally the home of Indigenous Cuzcatlecs and some Mayans. Spanish colonizers took over the region in 1524. In 1609, what is now El Salvador became part of the Spanish Captaincy General of Guatemala. Spanish colonizers governed the region from Guatemala City.
Federal Republic of Central America
The original Federal Republic of Central America of 1823 was based on the territory of the Captaincy General of Guatemala of New Spain which included what are now Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.
The Republic of El Salvador
The modern Republic of El Salvador was formed in 1841.
