Viva La Musica de Argentina, two Argentine Masses with over 200 singers at Lincoln Center

“Viva La Musica de Argentina” is a DCINY concert of two large-scale Argentine choral masses at David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center, Sunday, April 30, 2017 at 7pm.

The concert features the world premiere of Tango Credo by Martín Palmeri, led by guest conductor Saul Zaks; paired with Misa Criolla by Ariel Ramírez, conducted by Jonathan Griffith, DCINY Artistic Director and Principal Conductor.

Both performances feature the Distinguished Concerts Orchestra and Distinguished Concerts Singers International, an international chorus of more than 200 singers from Argentina, France, Spain, Denmark, Germany, Poland and the United States.

Spanish masses are heartfelt music that reaches into your soul. Misa Criolla is a world-renowned classic. Tango Credo is a significant new work that adds Tango to the canon of Spanish-language masses.

These works together represent the entire spirit of Argentina, from Salta in the north, to Buenos Aires, to Tierra del Fuego at the very end of the world.

A must-see concert for all Argentinos in New York and those who love spiritual music.

Tango Credo World Premiere

Composer Martín Palmeri (Buenos Aires, 1965) is best known for Misa a Buenos Aires (Misatango, 1996) written in Astor Piazzolla’s style of Tango Nuevo. Palmeri will join the world premiere on piano.

Conductor Saul Zaks (Buenos Aires, 1961) is a Grammy nominated Jewish-Argentine conductor who lives and works in Denmark. He was nominated for a 2017 Latin Grammy for “Best Tango Album” for Sax To Tango by
Julio Botti, Pablo Ziegler & Saul Zaks Conducting The University Of Southern Denmark Symphony Orchestra on the Zoho label.

Renowned bandoneonista Daniel BinelliRenowned bandoneonist Daniel Binelli (Quilmes, 1946) accompanies. He played in Osvaldo Pugliese’s orchestra for 14 years. He toured with Astor Piazzolla in the late 1980s. Later Binelli was music director for Tango X2, the famous Tango show that made Tango cool again to the young generation in Argentina in the 1990s.

Misa Criolla is a Classic Mass

Misa Criolla (1964) is one of the most beloved Spanish masses. It is filled with Argentinidad.

Composer Ariel Ramirez (Santa Fe, 1921-2010) was known for his work based on Argentine folk music. Here he uses Chacarera, Carnavalito, Estilo pampeano, and Andean rhythms and instruments.

Misa Criolla is one of first masses that was not written in Latin. It is Ramírez’ signature work. It has been recorded by Mercedes Sosa (1999) and Plácido Domingo (2003). It was performed in St. Peter’s Basilica in 2014.
