By the way, this time of year around November 19 is an important time for Puerto Ricans. The Feast of Our Lady of Providence, Patron Saint of Puerto Rico, is the traditional start of Puerto Rico’s Christmas season, the world’s longest.
Danza Fiesta
Founded in New York City in 1988, Danza Fiesta is a community dance theatre company dedicated to preserving Puerto Rican folk traditions. They are teaching artists who usually march at the front of New York City’s National Puerto Rican Day Parade.
They teach and perform many different Puerto Rican dance traditions including bomba, plena, and seis which is Jíbaro music of the iconic mountain farmers of Puerto Rico. When most Americans think of the island, they think of beaches, but the soul of Puerto Rico lives in the mountain heartland. ¡Jíbaro Soy!
Puerto Rican Culture Is Community
In New York, music, dance and theatre are performed on stage. In Puerto Rico they are performed at home and on the street as part of everyday family life and community celebrations.
Being in Diaspora in the time of social media, young Puerto Ricans are losing their connections with our traditions, so the work of Danza Fiesta is important. They don’t just teach dance theatre, they teach Puerto Rican!
We heard about Danza Fiesta from the island. They are that important. Watching them feels like home!
