The Blue Note Jazz Festival New York 2024 brings great jazz artists to New York City in June. It mostly presents jazz and rhythm and blues because jazz is derived from the blues. This is a beautiful festival that shows the deep roots of the African Diaspora around the world.

Arturo O’Farrill is really good about connecting all the jazz branches. Jazz is from New Orleans in conversation with Cuba, which itself was in conversation with Haiti. In 1810, more than half the people of New Orleans were Haitian Diaspora. Brazilian samba jazz (choro) developed independently, but has the exact same vibe. Traditional human culture derives from religious traditions. Jazz developed in Cuba and New Orleans from Yoruba and Dahomey (Fon) traditions, and from Candomblé (Kongo) traditions in Brazil.

The Tuareg are a very handsome people who run caravans across the Sahara desert. Their blue turbans are iconic. Blue is a symbol of Mother Afrika. The blue note (diminished scale and bending notes) and melisma (warbling on one syllable) are North African traditions.
