Bloomingdale’s in Manhattan’s Upper East Side is one of New York City’s iconic department stores.
Bloomingdale Made the Department Store Fun
At a time when most stores sold just one type of clothing, Joseph and Lyman Bloomingdale sold a wide variety of fashion, including European fashion, at their East Side Bazaar in 1872.
Bloomingdale’s created its fame by selling many different products at a central location and making shopping fun. That brought galas, fashion shows, and the first designer shopping bags to the retail experience.
For a while in the 1970s, Bloomingdale’s was even a place to see and be seen. Today, Bloomingdale’s remains that cool department store with a subway station right inside it.
