DAWN
DAWN is their new album coming in June, 2023. ALBA , a combination of Albert and Bárbara, means sunrise in Spanish.
Flamenco is a Spanish blend of many traditions that keeps evolving. Albert and Bárbara bring their own heritage into the rumba flamenca, the form that brings Caribbean traditions into traditional flamenco.
Albert Alabedra is from Barcelona, but his family is from Córdoba and Sevilla in Andalucía. He grew up with the rumba catalana which is a perfect complement to Bárbara’s background. albertalabedra.com
Bárbara Martínez is a New Yorker with a Venezuelan and Argentine heritage that includes some very famous artists and actresses.
These two and the flamenco all flow together naturally.
Many Americans don’t realize that Andalucía, Spain is just nine miles from Mother Africa. Flamenco and its culture has African influences too.
One of the things that struck us about this album is its lineup which includes some great musicians from New York and the African Diaspora. We love that there is kora and talking drum on this album. And the drummer is Australian Turkish.
There are so many influences here. This is true New York flamenco.
