Ana Tijoux is a Chilean French rapper who crossed over into Latin pop.
As a Chilean woman, her raps are notable for their lack of misogyny which is so common in rap and across the Latin world. In that sense, she is like Queen Latifah whose female positive raps shook up hip hop years ago. Tijoux is fierce. You’ve got to respect her for that.

Ana Tijoux
Anamaría Tijoux Merino was born in Lille, France on June 12, 1977. Her parents were political exiles during the Pinochet dictatorship. Two generations of Chileans have been marked by Pinochet. They are wary of dictatorship, and willing to fight against it. It’s become part of the Chilean identity. A female Chilean rapper is fierce.
Ana Tijoux came up with Makiza in the late 1990s. They had some success but never got really big.
Tijoux went solo in 2006 and immediately took off. Her collaboration “Eres Para Mí” with Julieta Venegas (2007) was a Latin hit that pulled Tijoux into the Latin pop frame.
She’s been doing singles and collaborations for awhile, but returns with 2024’s “Vida.” She was featured on Jorge Drexler’s “Universos Paralelos” which won the 2014 Latin Grammy for Record of the Year.
