Paul Taylor Dance Company
Paul Taylor founded his modern dance company in New York City in 1954. He was part of the crop of iconic New York modern dance companies who came up in that time. He loved classical music, especially baroque. Taylor’s breakthrough work was “Aureole” (1962) set to Handel. It was a plié of sorts, a juxtaposition of the modern and the old. The contrast blew the minds of critics, but the public loved it.
Watching this video, you can feel the energy of New York City in the 1950s. The World War II years had passed, and it was a time of great optimism for the future. Everything seemed possible. It’s worth noting that the modern period in the arts is a transition from rigid classical traditions to contemporary forms where pretty much anything goes. Paul Taylor is a master of that transitional period.
Taylor presented his first full evening of choreography in 1957 at Kaufmann Concert Hall at the 92nd Street Y, a home for dance that was a stage for many modern dance companies, a place where greatness begins. The Company was long in residence at New York City Center. It was the first modern dance company to be in residence at Lincoln Center. The Company has a long relationship with Orchestra of St. Luke’s, a contemporary chamber orchestra that constantly produces new work, and performs with many dance companies.
The Taylor School continues to produce the next generation of dancers.
