A Popular Downtown Lunch Spot
Broadway was the old Lenape trail to the Lenape village in what is now Inwood, and further upstate along the Hudson River.
In the English tradition of communal property, the area was known as The Commons from 1653 to 1699. It was a livestock pasture.
City Hall was built in 1812.
Tweed Courthouse was completed in 1881. Boss Tweed infamously used the construction to skim government funds for twenty years.
The park is managed by the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, better known as NYC Parks.
