The 1st NYC Indigenous Peoples Day Parade starts with a gathering for speakers and community prayers in the north end of Madison Square Park along 26th St, on Saturday, October 15, 2022, from 8am – 12 noon. It then marches down Broadway (the Lenape road), from 26th St near Madison Square to 17th St at Union Square, from 12noon – 3pm. Free! 🇺🇸🇨🇴🇵🇷
Union Square Park
The bottom-center of the photo has that street character who dresses in plastic bags and cavorts around Union Square and the Village. Wow! Great picture Pavone!
Young people hang out in the plaza and on the grass. Lovers embrace on park benches. Children play in Evelyn’s Playground.
The park hosts a twice-a-week Greenmarket and a Holiday Market. The Union Square Greenmarket is filled with colorful fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers. In the fall, you can find more different types of potatoes than we’ve ever seen. The fingerlings make great snacks. The Union Square Holiday Market is a good place to take children to do their holiday shopping.
The restaurant in the pavilion was once a Sex and the City location. In 2022, it is Freehold In the Park.
The square hosts International Workers Day and Labor Day celebrations, and the Disability Pride Festival. NYC’s Pride Parade and Dance Parade pass by.
Around Union Square
The streets that ring the square have some good shopping, dining and entertainment. It keeps changing.
17th Street in the north is anchored by a Barnes & Noble. It has a restroom. The W New York Union Square (Union Square Hotel) has a popular bar.
Union Square East (Park Avenue) has the historic Tammany Hall and the Daryl Roth Theatre are on Union Square East (Park Ave).
14th Street in the south has a Whole Foods. The big box stores above it provide great views over the square.
In the Neighborhood
Union Square is also a neighborhood. Live Nation produces rock concerts at Irving Plaza. The Paragon Sports up Broadway is one of NYC’s better sporting goods stores. The Garden of Eden Marketplace is a well-stocked neighborhood market.
